SALEM PREVAILS IN 4TH QUARTER

Salem won the fourth quarter Thursday night to defeat visiting Blacksburg 58-53 in a non-district girls' basketball game.

Shelly Johnson led the Spartans (4-2) with 21 points.

Salem faced a 23-8 deficit after one quarter before coming alive in the second period. The Indians (3-7) were outscored 39-22 in the second half.

Lisa Price led all scorers with 26 points and added 10 rebounds for Blacksburg. April Rogers added 11 points for the Indians.

Freshman Sarah Palmer tossed in 18 points for Salem, including three 3-pointers.

HOT SPRINGS - The ejection of Craig County's leading scorer, Chrissy Robertson, didn't affect the Rockets, as they went on to win their first game.

Robertson, the leading scorer for Craig County (2-4), was tossed in the first quarter for a flagrant foul, after already scoring eight points. Bonnie Boardwine led the Rockets with 20 points.

The Highlanders jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back en route to the easy Pioneer District victory.

Toree Morris scored 16 points including four 3-pointers and Marilea Hale added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Highlanders (7-1, 2-0).

Parry McCluer (5-1, 1-1) was led by Crystal Humphries with nine points.

BUCHANAN - Geaniene Jeter led the way with 10 points as the Cougars won a tightly contested Pioneer District game.

Covington (4-3, 1-1) won by outscoring the Knights 23-20 in the second half.

James River (1-6, 0-1) played without starter Heather Vines, who was out with a sprained ankle. Angie Johnson led the Knights with 13 points.

ROCKY GAP - Crystal Hubbard hit a jump shot from the free-throw line with 10 seconds left to ice the game for the Bobcats.

Hubbard led the Bobcats with 25 points.

Floyd County 60

MAX MEADOWS - With four minutes left, the Pioneers were within 11 points before the Buffaloes' stall tactics shortened the non-district game.

Floyd County (9-0), which extended a 36-game winning streak, was led by Laura Harman's 17 points as she dumped in four 3-pointers over the Pioneers' zone defense. Leigh-Ann Pursifull added 12 points for Floyd County.
