He matched the tournament's opening-round record and took a two-stroke lead over Doug Tewell and Neal Lancaster.
Mark Calcavecchia, Bob Estes, Mark McCumber, Gil Morgan and Mark Brooks were three strokes back on a day when a chilly wind swept the Oakwood Country Club course.
Wrenn, who has dabbled in TV commentary and course design and is not fully exempt on tour, got off to a poor start when he made a bogey-6 at the 515-yard 10th hole. Then he regrouped.
Wrenn strung together birdies at 15, 16 and 17. He had two more at Nos. 2 and 5 and then came the highlight of his round - an eagle-3 at the sixth hole when he rolled in a 25-footer.
``About that time I wasn't sure I wanted to stop,'' said Wrenn. ``I said, `Let's play another nine.'''
Wrenn, playing before the rain became heavy in the late afternoon, also birdied the seventh and finished the round with a pair of pars.
