50TH ANNIVERSARY OCT. 2 FOR NORTHSIDE PRESBYTERIAN

When NORTHSIDE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH in Blacksburg celebrates its 50th anniversary Oct. 2. The congregation also will hold a symbolic groundbreaking for an expansion and remodeling of the church building at Progress and Watson streets. Construction won't begin until spring, however.

Northside got its start in 1944 when three Blacksburg Presbyterian Church members - Janet Cameron, Hallie Hughes and Clara Underhill - began an afternoon Sunday school class for children in a home in the Potlikker Flats community in the north end of town. A cinder-block chapel, built in 1949, still stands. (It's the part with the steeple and belfry. Its bell came from an N&W locomotive.) A much larger sanctuary was appended to the chapel in 1975.

The anniversary celebration begins at 11 a.m. with worship and Holy Communion. A luncheon is set for 1 p.m. Members, former members and friends are welcome.

Northside has 231 members. The Rev. Dr. Hugh Springer has been its pastor since 1986. For more information, call 552-4327.

\ MANNY BROTMAN, founder and president of the Messianic Jewish Movement International, speaks Oct. 2 at the Radford Church of God in Christ on Russell Avenue. He'll be at the 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. services as part of the church's Israel Day observances. First Baptist Church of Dublin is helping to sponsor the event.

Singer SANDRA SHESKIN will accompany Brotman. Both have appeared on nationally televised religious programs.
