North Cross 27
Virginia Episcopal 6
Trip Bell ran for one touchdown and returned an interception for another as the Raiders easily outpaced Lynchburg's Virginia Episcopal School in a non-conference game.
Bell raced in from 30 yards on the fifth play of the game, giving North Cross (2-1) a lead it never relinquished.
After Skip Johnson's 22 yard scoring run gave the Raiders a 12-0 lead, Bell struck again - this time on defense. The junior cornerback came down with an errant pass from Bishops quarterback Greg Owens and raced 55 yards for the score.
Senior nose guard Pira Kanithanon had a hand in the play, hitting Owens as he released the ball. Kanithanon had an outstanding day, recording two sacks among his four tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
Quarterback Hal Johnson completed 14 of 27 passes, including an 11-yard scoring pass to Robert Rude in the third quarter that put North Cross up 27-0. Johnson did not throw an interception.
VES (1-1), stopped at the North Cross 39 on its opening possession, did not threaten to score until the fourth quarter, when the Bishops scored on a 13-yard pass from Owens to Tom O'Neill.
E.C. Glass 35
William Fleming 0
The Hilltoppers capitalized on three second-quarter turnovers to build a 21-point lead and went on to shut out the Colonels in a non-district matchup at Victory Stadium.
After a 35-yard field-goal attempt by William Fleming's Garrett Lancaster was blocked in the first quarter, a fumble by Philip Barrett at the Colonels' 24-yard line was recovered by the Hilltoppers' George Brown. A short scoring march was capped by Chris Matthews' 1-yard run.
Chris Clay picked off a pass by Shannon Wilson at the E.C. Glass 41 to set up the second score, Breon Crennel's 3-yard run.
The backbreaker came when the Colonels' Daniel Gunn fumbled at his 29-yard line late in the half. Four plays later, S'Andre Kendrick threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Brian Farmer with 1 minute, 10 seconds left in the second quarter.
On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, Kendrick hit O.J. Jones with a 57-yard touchdown pass. The conversion kick gave the Hilltoppers a 28-0 advantage.
Fleming threatened in the third quarter when a 61-yard pass from Wilson to Barrett moved the ball to the Glass 14-yard line. Gunn, who finished with 108 yards on 22 carries, then ran for 12. But on the next play, Gunn took a handoff and fumbled into the end zone. The loose ball was recovered by Clay to preserve the shutout for the Hilltoppers.
The final touchdown came on an 8-yard pass from Kendrick to Brian Brooks in the third period.
Kendrick finished 7-of-13 for 145 yards with the three touchdowns.
