IT BEATS PORK BELLIES;

Tired of buying pork-belly futures? Have an itch to play the Virginia Senate race electronic market? All you need is $5 to $500, a computer, and access to the Internet and its Telenet facility.

Sheryl Ball, a Virginia Tech economics assistant professor, said $10 is enough of an investment to have fun on one of the two futures exchanges within the Iowa Electronic Market based on the Virginia race.

The market is open 24 hours a day, though traders may be limited to just a few on-line minutes during peak afternoon hours. The market closes on election eve, at 11:59 p.m. Nov. 7.

To open an account, e-mail the University of Iowa at IEMscout-po.biz.uiowa.edu or write the Iowa Electronic Market, Pappajohn Building, College of Business, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa 52242. Make checks payable to the University of Iowa.
