School officials said the plan reaffirms the school's emphasis on undergraduate education.
The programs that would be cut include mathematics, sociology and psychology. The roughly 150 graduate students enrolled in the programs would be able to finish their work, but no more would be admitted.
The goal, said Provost Gillian Cell, head of the committee that drafted the plan, is to maintain a handful of graduate programs that can be considered nationally prominent. Those would include American history and culture programs that utilize local resources.
The committee will seek comments at two public meetings on campus and at separate meetings with representatives from programs it proposes cutting.
The board of visitors is to act on a final version of the plan in early November.
