APPLE HARVEST TO BE SMALL BUT SWEET

Apple farmers are gearing up to reap the fruits of what is expected to be a somewhat sparser and considerably sweeter crop this year.

Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Rome, McIntosh and Gala apples are harvested near the end of the month. Stamens, Winesap, York and Granny Smith apples follow soon after October 1.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture predicts that this year's apple harvest will yield less fruit than usual because of last winter's harsh temperatures, but the apples should have a higher sugar content than normal because of the dry summer.

Thousands of visitors are expected to celebrate apple-picking season at four central Virginia orchards over the next few weeks.
