Beggerly's lead was never more than about a second. But after passing pole-sitter Johnny Rumley in turn 2 on the first lap, the Pelham driver never was challenged.
"I knew I had to gamble and try to get out front," said Beggerly, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Late Model champion the past two years and the national champ last season. "But I also knew if I didn't make it I could end up in 10th place or so real quick if I got hung up on the outside."
Rumley stayed behind Beggerly the entire 200 laps. Twice in the final 20 laps, the Winston-Salem, N.C., driver pulled up to Beggerly's back bumper but no closer.
"It's hard to pass someone here when you're equal without pushing them out of the way and I didn't want to do that to Beggerly," said Rumley, who normally runs the Busch Grand National circuit.
Phil Warren of Norfolk charged through the field to finish third after starting 23rd
Tony McGuire of Roanoke was the top-finishing New River Valley Speedway regular. McGuire finished fourth despite almost being overcome by fumes coming into his car through a small hole in the floor board.
Jeff Agnew of Floyd finished eighth. The points leader at New River was the only other area driver in the top 10.
