Global Showcase

RADFORD - More than 40 regional businesses and manufacturers will display products and services Wednesday at the New River Valley Global Showcase '94 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Radford University's Dedmon Center.

Admission is free.

The event ``features the direct connection between the New River Valley and the global economy,'' said Jerry White, chairman of the Pulaski County Board of Supervisors. It will be just one of several events during Industry Appreciation Week, with others including a reception for exhibitors Tuesday and a golf tournament for business representatives that day at the Draper Valley Golf Course near the Pulaski-Wythe county border.

``What makes this event special,'' said co-coordinator Jill Barr, ``is that it's another example of regional cooperation.''

Sponsors include the counties of Pulaski, Giles and Floyd; the city of Radford; New River Community College and Radford University, and economic development groups including the New River Valley Economic Development Alliance, Montgomery Regional Commission and Pulaski Encouraging Progress.

``Selecting the global theme was easy,'' Barr said. ``Virginia's southwest has over 300 companies with international ties and Radford University just broke ground for its New College of Global Studies. ... The day will be a good opportunity to see the type of jobs available and the products manufactured in the New River Valley. For businesses, it's an excellent opportunity to network with potential clients.''

Topic is rest areas

WYTHEVILLE - State transportation officials are considering sites for rest areas on northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Wythe and Smyth counties, following a public presentation on proposed locations last Thursday in Wytheville at a citizens' information meeting.

Three sites are being considered in Wythe County for the northbound rest area, around the Rural Retreat area. Two Wythe and one Smyth site are being considered for the southbound rest area.

Once sites are chosen, designs will be prepared, impacts on land use will be gauged and right-of-way acquisition plans will be drawn up.

Right-of-way purchases are to be complete by March 1996, and final construction plans by April 1996.
