CLONTZ, PRIDE TO PLAY IN ARIZONA

Former Virginia Tech pitcher Brad Clontz and former William and Mary basketball player Curtis Pride are among the top baseball prospects who will join Michael Jordan in the Arizona Fall League when play begins Oct.6.

The league, starting its third season, is made up mostly of Class AA and Class AAA players. Each major-league team can send six players to the league, although the Chicago White Sox received an exemption to add one - Jordan.

Clontz had a combined 38 saves for Atlanta's Class AA Greenville and Class AAA Richmond farm teams this season. Pride, a guard during his basketball career with the Tribe, reached the majors with Montreal in 1993 despite being deaf.

Simon Cooke shot a 68 to finish first individually and Jimmy Flippen and Lewis Chitengwa tied at 71 for second as the Virginia golf team took the first-round lead of the Virginia Intercollegiate League State Championships at Hot Springs Monday.

he Cavaliers finished at 284 on the par-72 Lower Cascades. James Madison is second at 292, followed by Virginia Tech (297), Richmond (298), VCU (300), William and Mary (303), George Mason (304), Liberty (305), Old Dominion (306), Radford (311) and VMI (328).

Sean Farrell was the lone Virginia Tech golfer in the top 10. He shot a 72 to tie with four others at fourth.

The Cave Spring golf team shot a 306 at the par-71 Roanoke Country Club to wrap up the Roanoke Valley District regular-season title. Patrick Henry was second at 325, followed by Franklin County (328), Pulaski County (352) and William Fleming (465). Mark Baldwin finished at 384 to earn individual medalist of the year honors. The teams will meet in the district playoffs Oct.3 at Countryside.
