BRINGING A KING IS ULTIMATE IN SHOW-AND-TELL

The exiled KING OF RWANDA, King Kigeli V, spoke to Christiansburg Elementary fifth-graders last week at an assembly in his honor in the school gym. He then made informal visits to each of the school's classrooms throughout the afternoon.

The king and his interpreter, Boniface Benzinge, were in the area visiting The Rev. Harry and Shelia Scott of Christiansburg. Harry Scott, pastor of St. Peters Anglican Catholic Church, met the king at College of Bishops meeting in Liberty, N.Y. and invited him to visit the New River Valley. Kigeli, now living in Arlington, Va., has been in the United States since June of 1992.

Shelia Scott, a third and fourth grade special education teacher at Christiansburg Elementary, used the opportunity to introduce pupils at her school to a foreign leader.

King Kigeli emphasized in a brief introduction the importance of keeping up with studies, telling pupils that they are the future of their country. Benzinge then explained some Rwandan geography, culture and history and gave a brief summary of the king's mission in political exile.

The pupils got to ask questions that were interpreted to the royal visitor by Benzinge. They listened to the answers first in the king's native language, Kinyarwanda, then in the translated English. Most questions were of a personal nature inquiring about family, favorite foods, pets, sports and especially the king's height (he stands 7 feet 2 inches tall).

They broke into laughter when an inquisitive fellow fifth-grader, Kristen Hale, ran up to stand next to the king to see just how tall he really is.

Josh Unger, a fourth-grader waiting in the office to leave early for the day at the time of the assembly, told principal Janice Roback that he was disappointed to miss the king's visit to his classroom. Roback brought him to the king for a personal introduction and handshake. Josh, looking at his hand in wonder as he walked away, said, "I'm never washing this hand again."
