ROANOKE VALLEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS

Retail sales registered a healthy increase in the spring, according to statistics reported last week by the Virginia Department of Taxation. But it was new-car sales that rode the fast lane, based on August's numbers.

Roanoke Valley retail sales were up 18.6 percent in the second quarter compared with the first quarter and 8.6 percent compared with 1993's second quarter.

Roanoke Valley new-car dealers reported a 25.4 percent increase in sales in August compared with July, according to statistics from the Virginia Automobile Dealers Association. The August total was 53.3 percent ahead of August 1993.
