FAIRFAX COUNTY BOARD SKIRTS `ADULT' BOOK ISSUE

Fairfax County libraries should not interfere in parents' decisions about their children's reading material, the Board of Supervisors agreed Monday.

The board did not directly address whether ``adult'' material should be off-limits to minors, but a nonbinding statement appeared to back away from that idea.

``Any action which dictates which books can or cannot be read trespasses on the rights of parents to supervise the education of their children and is a serious infraction by government of parent responsibilities,'' the statement said.

The 7-1 vote in favor of the statement included three Democrats and four Republicans in favor. There was one abstention, and one member of the board was absent for the vote, the latest skirmish in a battle over library materials that began more than two years ago.

The county's independent Library Board earlier agreed to study a special adults-only library section. It was unclear who would rule on adult material or what criteria would be used.

The Board of Supervisors also voted to invite the Library Board to a summit on book procurement after a Christian activist complained about revealing photos in a new book on the history of the gay rights movement.
