Seminar on abuse

MOUNTAIN LAKE - Linda Blick, a nationally known lecturer and expert on child sexual abuse, presents a one-day seminar Wednesday, Oct. 26, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at Mountain Lake Resort Hotel. The seminar is sponsored by The Giles Multidiscipline Team of the Giles Department of Social Services for social workers, therapists, law enforcement personnel, jurists, educators and members of the medical community.

A licensed social worker, Blick is founder and president of The Chesapeake Institute. She chaired the 1982 White House Conference on Child Sexual Abuse and has co-authored several articles on child sexual abuse.

The $32 fee includes refreshments, lunch and seminar handouts. Overnight accommodations are available.

BLACKSBURG - The Montgomery County Republican campaign headquarters is now open at Gables Shopping Center on South Main Street. The hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

The headquarters can provide information and materials supporting the campaigns of U.S. Senate candidate Oliver North and U.S. House of Representatives candidate Steve Fast.

NRCC classes

DUBLIN - New River Community College is offering 15 new courses for college credit that can be completed in 10 weeks. The mini-semester begins Monday, Oct. 3. Classes will be held at the college's Christiansburg site, located at 412 Roanoke St.

Classes to be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays include "History of Western Philosophy," "Oral Communication," "Business Letter Writing," "ESL: Oral and Written Communication," "College Composition I," "Survey of American Literature" and "Introduction of Cultural Geography."

Classes to be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays include "Principles of Accounting," "Technical Writing," "Math for the Liberal Arts" and "Applied Calculus II."

"Retail Organization Management" will be offered on Wednesdays. "Orientation" and "History of Architecture" will be held on Thursdays, "National Electric Code" on Saturdays and "Theater Appreciation" on Sundays.
