FLOYD COUNTY STILL UNBEATEN

Floyd County shot 66.7 percent from the floor in the first half and had a 25-point lead by halftime on the way to its 10th victory without a loss, a 74-52 decision over Salem on Tuesday night in girls' basketball.

Carrie Chaffin scored 12 of her game-high 22 points in the first quarter to help Floyd County (10-0), Timesland's top-ranked team, to a 28-13 lead. The Buffaloes made 20 of their first 30 shots.

Leigh-Ann Pursifull had 15 points, six assists and three steals for the Buffaloes, who had 18 steals as a team. Melissa Cantrell had 10 points and four steals, and Laura Harman scored 10 points.

Cantrell and Chaffin made two 3-pointers.

Angie Bryson and Shellie Johnson each scored 11 points for Salem.

Radford 48

Narrows 41

RADFORD - Crystal Hubbard continued her scoring surge with 22 points to lead the Bobcats (6-4) to a non-district victory over the Green Wave (4-4).

Hubbard, a junior guard, has averaged a little more than 20 points in Radford's past three games. The Bobcats (6-4) got a defensive lift from senior center Shannon Bragg, who had 12 rebounds and five blocks.

Narrows (4-4) was led by 15 points from Bud Lucas.

Liberty 49

Amherst County 39

BEDFORD - Sue Cowlbeck scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help the Minettes (5-3, 5-3) stun first-place Amherst County (6-2, 6-2) in the Seminole District.

Liberty (5-3) used an aggressive 2-3 zone to hold Amherst's top scorer, Erin Johannes, to 14 points. The Lancers (6-2) scored only 15 points in the second half. The Minettes also got five points and a game-high nine assists from Amy Baxter.

Marion 55

Carroll County 36

HILLSVILLE - The Scarlet Hurricane (8-1) wore down the Cavaliers (8-4) with a depth and balance scoring to win a non-district game.

Marion outscored Carroll County 23-11 in the final eight minutes to pull away after holding a seven-point lead through three quarters. Stacy Miller led the Scarlet Hurricane with 11 points.

Marie Martin scored 15 points and Bethany Hill had 12 for Carroll, which lost to Fieldale-Collinsville on Monday.

Christiansburg 44

Tazewell 40

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Blue Demons made seven of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off the Bulldogs in a non-district game.

Christiansburg (4-4) made 16 of 23 free throws, and Tazewell made only 10 of 24.

The Bulldogs (2-5) led 13-5 after the first quarter, but Christiansburg came roaring back behind Maureen Jackson, who scored 10 of her game-high 20 in the second quarter. Tazewell was led by Starr Anderson and Amanda Peery with 11 points each.

Lord Botetourt 53

Blacksburg 39

BLACKSBURG - Sarah Moore and Summer Plunkett hit 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter to help the Cavaliers break open a close game and run off with a non-district victory over the Indians.

The victory was Lord Botetourt's third over Blacksburg this season, but Tuesday's game was much closer than the previous two.

The Cavaliers (8-3) held a 33-32 lead after three quarters, but the 3-pointers by Moore and Plunkett and 10 fourth-quarter points from Sarah Hicks put away the Indians.

The Cavaliers outscored Blacksburg 20-7 in the final period despite making just 6-of-12 free throws.

Hicks made 10 of the 12 Lord Botetourt 2-point field goals and finished with 26 points. Plunkett scored 10 and hit three of the Cavaliers' five 3-pointers.

Lisa Price led Blacksburg (3-8) with 16 points.

Galax 64

Giles 62

GALAX - Tammy Cox hit two free throws with eight seconds left to give the Maroon Tide a two-point victory over the Spartans in a non-district battle.

Giles led by three late in the game after Kelly Williams, who scored 19 points, hit four consecutive free throws, but Galax (6-2) came back. Candy Owen hit two free throws to cut the deficit to a point, and then made the front end of a one-and-one with 55 seconds left to tie the score.

Galax stole the ball with less than 15 seconds to go and Giles (6-3) fouled Cox, who hit the winning free throws. Cox led Galax with a game-high 32 points despite feeling ill.

Giles got 15 points from Tomika Saunders.

Auburn 69

Fort Chiswell 42

RINER - Michelle Collins scored 14 points to lead the Eagles to a non-district victory over the Pioneers in a non-district game.

Julie Bower added 12 points for Auburn (5-3), and Lori Lyons and Sherry Smith each had 11. Smith added nine steals and four assists.

Beth Freeman led Fort Chiswell with 11 points.

Staunton River 56

Buckingham County 15

MONETA - Courtney Hurd scored Staunton River's first 11 points and 12 of her 15 points in the first quarter as the Golden Eagles blitzed the Knights in a Seminole District game.

Staunton River (6-2) got 16 points from Deena Mitchell and 11 from Stephanie McCarty. The Knights (0-7) did not have a scorer in double figures.

SHAWSVILLE - Robin Burdette scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Shawnees (5-3) blasted the Rockets (0-8) in a non-district game.
