PUNT, PASS AND KICK A CONTEST OF FOOTBALL BASICS|

To succeed at football, a player often must be able to do several things. Such as punt, pass and kick.

That is the idea behind the annual Punt, Pass and Kick competitions.

Competitors ages 8 to 15 receive points based on the distance and accuracy of their passes and kicks. Scores for the three events are added together, and the youth with the highest total wins.

At the competition sponsored by the Blacksburg Jaycees, 13-year-old LEE SMITH of Blacksburg had the highest score - 240 points.

That was just ahead of McCoy's LUKE McCOY, who scored 229 to capture the 10-year-old division.

Other age-group winners were BRIAN ROBINSON of Blacksburg among the 8-year-olds (93 points); JOSHUA PRICE of Blacksburg among the 9-year-olds (127 points); BRETT SMITH of Blacksburg among the 11-year-olds (182 points); WILLIAM LONG of Blacksburg among the 12-year-olds (197 points); and DUSTIN MAUK of Blacksburg among the 14-year-olds (199 points).

All the age group winners advance to the sectional competition, Oct. 8 in Lexington. There they will battle winners from recent contests in Christiansburg, Radford and elsewhere throughout the region.

TENNIS TIME: Top Gun and Net Set came up winners as the Radford World Team tennis League opened the fall season.

NORM KOPP subbed for WAYNE NESTER and helped STEVE COX win at men's doubles, and Kopp and LAURA KAMINSKI won handily at mixed doubles as Net Set edged the Aces 41-40.

CARA PAPUS and KAREN CRONIN combined to win three matches as Top Gun topped NRV 34-32. The pair won at women's doubles, then each emerged victorious in mixed doubles - Papus with GENE HURST and Cronin with MIKE CRONIN.

BLADING AROUND: Roller hockey is the newest sport offered for youths by the Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Department.

The sport is open to anyone ages 9-17. Participants must furnish their own equipment, except for head gear and sticks.

The registration fee is $20 for town residents and $25 for non-residents. The fee includes a team jersey.

Registration continues through Oct. 28. Leagues will be formed only if there are enough participants. The schedule and location of games is to be announced.

For more information, call CHUCK MUNCY, the supervisor of athletics, at 382-2349.

HOOPING IT UP: Registration is already under way for the winter youth basketball season for the Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Department.

There will be five leagues for boys and five for girls: Pee Wee (ages 7-8 as of March 1, 1995, and all first-graders), Minor (ages 9-10), Major (ages 11-12, all seventh-graders eligible), Senior (ages 13-14 , all seventh-graders eligible; those playing on eighth-grade teams are not eligible), and High School (those playing varsity or junior varsity basketball are not eligible).

The cost is $20 for town residents and $25 for non-residents for the Pee Wee, Minor, Major and Senior leagues. The cost is $70 per team for the High School League.

Registration continues through Oct. 28. For more information, call CHUCK MUNCY, the supervisor of athletics, at 382-2349.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Montgomery Department of Parks and Recreation is looking for a few good people.

The department needs youth basketball volunteers and coaches as well as scorekeepers, officials and support personnel for both youth basketball and football.

To volunteer, or to find out more about these programs, call TIM COONEY with the county's Parks and Recreation Department at 382-6978.

ACES WILD: He had to go to Tennessee to do it, but Christiansburg's JIM MOYE recorded a hole-in-one last Tuesday. Moye used a 6-iron to ace the 169-yard 13th hole at Roan Valley Golf Estates in Mountain City, Tenn.

Moye's playing partners and witnesses were ERNIE AKERS, NELSON RIDINGER and HARVEY SOWERS.

HONOR ROLL: The honors continue to pour in for the local participants in last summer's Commonwealth Games in Roanoke. PRESTON HALL of Blacksburg, a competitor in the wrestling tournament, was a finalist for Male Athlete of the Year from the state games. The honor went to JAMES KISER of Manassas, a power-lifter and track and field participant who begins each day by doing 2,500 sit-ups.

A-RACING WE GO: Three tickets are still available for Sunday's trip to the Tyson Holly Farms 400 Winston Cup race at North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Motor Speedway.

The trip is sponsored by the Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Department. The cost is $45 and includes transportation and a ticket to the race. Anyone under 18 may go if accompanied by a paying adult.
