SUPERVISORS TO SEE REGULAR CRIME REPORTS

Roanoke County Police Chief John Cease made a presentation to the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday about ways his department makes crime reports available to the public.

The briefing was made in response to a business owner on Brambleton Avenue, Roy Lochner, who complained last month that he had trouble getting information from the department after several break-ins. He asked that reports be made regularly to the Board of Supervisors.

Crime Prevention Officer Tom Kincaid told the board that monthly crime reports are distributed by telephone to 175 businesses. A new system of faxing that information will be in place soon.

Reports will start being given to the board on a regular basis, Cease said.

In other action, supervisors took advantage of a new state law to eliminate reams of paperwork involved with tax collection on vehicles.

The commissioner of revenue will assess vehicles according to the previous year's tax return, so residents who filed a return the previous year no longer have to file a personal property tax return every January.

The exceptions to that are when residents acquire a new vehicle, when there is a change affecting its assessment, or when there is a change in the name or address of the owner.
