THE PEOPLE COLUMN

Garrison Keillor has told just about all the tales he has about Lake Wobegon, where all the women are strong, the men are good-looking and the children are above average.

That doesn't mean, however, that the mellifluous voice of public radio's "A Prairie Home Companion" is calling it quits any time soon.

In fact, Keillor said Wednesday in St. Paul, Minn., if not for the show he'd probably stay holed up in a basement apartment, "surrounded by stacks of old magazines and newspapers, living with 12 or 14 cats."

As the live broadcast marks its 20th anniversary this fall, Keillor hopes it won't be long before he steps from the spotlight to become a "vaguely pleasant, aging, beloved personality who would say hello at the beginning and say good night at the end."

\ Rob Morrow is fleeing the frozen north for the greener fields of Hollywood.

The executive producers of "Northern Exposure" confirmed Wednesday that Morrow will end his stint as indentured physician Joel Fleischman when the show's 100th episode airs Jan. 9.

The actor, who stars in the new film "Quiz Show," is departing CBS to pursue a movie career.

Actor-comedian Paul Provenza will play Phillip Cooper, the new doc in town from Los Angeles. His character will be introduced Nov. 21.
