MORRISON SUSPENDED BY TECH

Coach Frank Beamer announced Thursday he had suspended freshman linebacker Tony Morrison for Virginia Tech's football game Saturday at Syracuse.

Beamer said the one-game suspension was for a violation of team rules and he would not comment further.

Morrison, a freshman from Chesapeake, is the primary backup at whip linebacker. He has seen action in each of the Hokies' four games, recording nine tackles and one sack.

Redshirt freshman Korey Irby will replace Morrison as the backup to Brandon Semones against the Orangemen.

Saturday night's double-points races in all divisions will highlight the Wade's/Campbell's Soups/Winston-Heritage Buick, Olds, Pontiac, GMC 200.

Chitengwa and Farrell will represent their native Zimbabwe in the tournament, along with two other players.

The World Team Amateur championships take place every two years with the top four players from 52 countries vying for the title. This year's U.S. team is comprised of Tiger Woods of Stanford (1994 U.S. Amateur champion), Allen Doyle (top-ranked U.S. amateur), John Harris (1993 U.S. Amateur champion) and Todd Dempsey of Arizona State (1993 NCAA champion).

The Roanoke Valley Tennis Association will hold its fall doubles tournament outdoors for the first time and has added a one-point tournament and a players' party in an effort to increase participation.

The tournament, which is the RVTA's fund-raiser, will be Oct.7-9 at River's Edge and Crystal Spring courts and is expected to feature men's, women's and mixed doubles brackets, as well as a consolation draw to guarantee each team two matches. The one-point tournament is Oct.8 and includes prize packages for the winners and runners-up. The party is scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct.8.
