SOBERING THOUGHT FROM UNC'S SMITH

Dean Smith, North Carolina's basketball coach, scolded the presidents of Atlantic Coast Conference schools on a taped TV show, saying only one responded to his call to ban beer advertisements from televised college games.

``It's a shame that the worst problem they have on the campuses now is alcohol consumption,'' Smith said. ``I'm not telling anyone to not have a beer, but through the years I've asked the presidents of the ACC to do away with the silly ads that say, `And now, a word from our good friends at Budweiser ... '''

Smith said that of the ACC's nine presidents only North Carolina State Chancellor Larry Monteith responded to his letter, and Monteith agreed with his position. Smith is waiting for replies from the rest.

``We'll see how many watch this program,'' Smith said during a television interview with former UNC system President William Friday on Wednesday night.
