CHILD'S PLAY BLAMED IN APARTMENT FIRE

A fire started by a child playing with matches Thursday evening damaged an apartment in a Roanoke public housing development.

It was the second fire started by a child in the neighborhood in 10 days.

Roanoke District Fire Chief Garry Basham said the fire started in the upstairs back bedroom of a two-story apartment at 1815 Dupree St. N.W., in the Lincoln Terrace community.

A 3-year-old boy playing with matches started the blaze, Basham said. The fire was under control in five minutes, and no one was injured, he said. Damage totaled about $6,000.

On Sept. 18, a fire started by children playing with matches did $5,000 in damage to an apartment just a few blocks away on Hunt Avenue.
