THE TIPOFF

MANUAL LABOR: The Virginia-Carolina Craftsmen's Fall Classic opens today at the Roanoke Civic Center. More than 250 artists and craftsmen will show and sell such items as pottery, wood, baskets, jewelry, toys, musical instruments, folk art and more in sessions through Sunday.

The show will be open today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Admission is $3.50 for adults and 75 cents for children ages 2 to 12.

AUDUBON'S RETURN: The Audubon Quartet will perform in concert Saturday night at 8 and Sunday afternoon at 3 in Squires Recital Salon at Virginia Tech. The group is continuing its two-year series of concerts of the complete string quartets of Beethoven.

On deck this time are his Quartet in C minor, Opus 18, No. 4, the Quartet in E-flat Major, Opus 127 and the Quartet in C Major, Opus 59, No. 3.

The Audubon is Tech's resident quartet and consists of violin players David Ehrlich and David Salness, viola player Doris Lederer and cellist Clyde Shaw. The group celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

BUTCH COMES BACK: Shawsville native Butch Taylor will head the group that will perform Sunday night at Shawsville High School in a concert dubbed Jazz in the Country.

Taylor has spent 15 years in music working with Tanya Tucker, directing the musical productions at the Dominion Opry and leading his own bands and playing as a sideman for jazz stars.

He'll be accompanied by jazz educators/musicians from James Madison University and the University of Virginia and jazz guitarist Tom Harbeck of Harrisonburg.

Admission is $7.50 per person. The gates open at 6 p.m., the music starts at 7, and the proceeds will go toward the Shawsville Ruritan Club's high school scholarship and village beautification projects.

OUT THERE: The Rising Star 3 convention for those interested in science fiction, fantasy, space or other related activities will be tonight through Sunday at the Salem Civic Center.

Admission is $15 at the door, and the proceeds go toward scholarships.

Guest stars will include Arlene Golonka, who has appeared in television's ``Matlock'' and ``Murder, She Wrote,'' Richard Biggs, who plays Dr. Stephen Franklin in ``Babylon 5,'' the Trimble family of Star Trek fan-atics and the Society for Creative Anachronism, scream queen and pinup model Brinke Stevens and actress Deanna Lund, among others.

Activities will include workshops in writing, screenwriting, costuming, art and model building, merchandise sales, gaming and more.

VOICE WORK: Soprano Marianne Sandborg will sing music from Mozart to Cole Porter tonight at 7:30 in the Olin Theater at Roanoke College. She is known for her solo singing with the Roanoke Valley Choral Society and other groups. Rebecca Wallenborn will accompany her on piano and Roger Quigley on clarinet. Admission is free. MOUNTAIN VIEW: An Appalachian adaptation of ``Godspell,'' the hit musical taken from the Bible, is under way at the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center through Oct. 8. Show time is 8 p.m. tonight, Saturday night and Oct. 7 and 8, and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for senior citizens, $7 for students and children.

GOING SOLO: Soprano Sally Ahner will present a concert Tuesday night at 7:30 at Ferrum College's Grousbeck Music Center. Ahner studied at the Franz Schubert Institute in Austria. Her program will include selections by Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and Claude Debussy.

She will be accompanied by Erma Rose of the Ferrum music faculty.

Ahner also will sing Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Olin Recital Hall of Roanoke College in Salem. Admission to both events is free.

MAKE A NOTE: Affair in the Square, the annual fund-raiser for Roanoke's Center in the Square arts complex, will be Oct. 8 from 8 p.m. to midnight at Center. It's black-tie optional, the food and drink are good, and the entertainment runs the gamut from blues to show tunes to folk to country to jazz and rock. And that's not all.
