LAUREL PARK GETS A BIT MORE SLEEP FOR HOLIDAY WIN

The unlucky recipients of having to play a 9 a.m. high school basketball game on New Year's Day were the losers in Friday's consolation round of the Advance Auto Parts Holiday Classic at Salem High Friday.

Flora, S.C., and Laurel Park escaped that reward by winning. They meet at 11 a.m. for fifth place. Flora knocked off Franklin County 64-59 while the Lancers mauled Fieldale-Collinsville 72-54. So Franklin County and Fieldale-Collinsville arise early today to settle seventh place.

Flora (4-3) was paced by Geovonia Williams with 18. Williams hit 11 points in the first quarter, got into foul trouble and didn't score again until the final period when he collected seven points.

Chad Foutz and Jason Conklin each contributed 14 points for Franklin County (2-4).

In the second game, Laurel Park (5-2) won the battle of Piedmont District rivals James Millner with 30 points. Millner hit 15 points in each half and had at least two field goals in each quarter. Fieldale-Collinsville (4-3) was led by Shane Donavant with 16.
