OBIT HEARD, BRIG. GEN. R. TOWNSEND

HEARD, Brig. Gen. R. Townsend, 97, of Middleburg, Va., died peacefully Tuesday, December 28, 1993, at his farm in Middleburg. Born August 12, 1897, the son of a Major General. Gen. Heard as a Lt. in World War I shot the first American shot from his gun battery in the horse drawn 6th Field Artillery, losing his kidney to combat wounds, he survived the trenches of France to lead a successful career as White House military attache to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, to being the designer of the Purple Heart and the Legion of Merit, and G-2 Commander for General Douglas MacArther in the Pacific in World War II. General Heard had a unique perspective on history. Decorated with every medal but the Medal of Honor (to his chagrin), Gen. Heard was a proud veteran of the hot and cold wars even when he refused to talk of his days with OSS and the CIA's founder Allen Dulles, he always had a quick inside story to tell. All his life an active Fox hunter and supporter of the Orange County Hunt Club, he was the founder of the Heard Cup Championship Steeplechase race at the Myopia Hunt Club, former President of the Association of Stock Market Analysts, and founder of Audior Inc., a Washington D.C. investment company, Gen. Heard was well known in investment circles as being a specialist in overseas trading and the Gold Market. Actively traveling worldwide until his late eighties, Gen. Heard seemed tireless. Survived by his wife of 46 years, Mrs. Rose Loring Heard; and four children, Mrs. Kay Hanson, Mr. Ren Heard, Roanoke, Mr. Loring Heard, Rev. Victoria Heard; and four grandchildren, Sarah, Jaren, Jessee, Edward and ward, Ms. Angie Newton. Gen. Heard was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in the family vaught in New York, beside his parents. Donations in lieu of flowers, may be made in his honor to the Piedmont Environmental Council, c/o Middleburg National Bank, Middleburg, Va.
