1994: A NEW YEAR TO SHOP, SKI

After recovering from New Year's Eve celebrations the night before, Virginians started 1994 by shopping, skiing and welcoming the arrival of new family members.

Shoppers got up early Saturday and headed to the malls to find special post-holiday deals.

"We had people waiting at the doors when we opened," said Doug Dayberry, assistant store manager at the Leggett department store at Chesterfield Towne Center in suburban Richmond. "Today really is the day they're picking up on clearance goods. Some people are buying for next Christmas."

In Bath County, guests at The Homestead resort celebrated by attending lavish New Year's Eve parties at the hotel and many took to the ski trails the next morning.

"We have a lot of people here. All the slopes are covered. It couldn't be better," said ski-area manager Sepp Kober, who was very pleased by the area's recent snowfall. "They're calling for snow again tonight."

The New Year ushered in new additions to several families, including a Hampton couple. Justin Ryan Fenn was born at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News just seconds after midnight, said the baby's father, Derek Fenn.

Justin's mother, Crystal, started having contractions during a New Year's Eve party, Fenn said.

"Her water broke at 7:30. We knew it was time to leave the party," he said. "We started timing the contractions . . . and then checked into the hospital."

After she went into labor, the nurse on duty called her husband's attention to the monitor. "The clock turned to zeros and the baby came out. A new year with a bang!"

About 110 motorcycle enthusiasts assembled Saturday morning on U.S. 1 in Alexandria for the 11th annual Polar Bear Run, an 80-mile ride on Virginia and Maryland roads. Members of Harley-Davidson and BMW clubs were among the participants.

Violence marked the holiday weekend in Fairfax County, where police were investigating the fatal shooting of a gas station worker.

Three people were reported killed in weekend accidents on Virginia roads, state police said.
