CAVE SPRING 3RD IN SALEM TOURNAMENT

James Irvin had a career-high 30 points, including five 3-point goals, as Cave Spring took third place with a 76-60 victory over William Byrd in the first Advance Auto Parts Holiday Classic basketball tournament at Salem High School on Saturday.

The Knights (4-5) led most of the way behind Irvin, who hit four of his 3-pointers in the first half when Cave Spring moved on top 35-32. His last 3-pointer snapped a 32-32 tie. His previous best game this season was 21 points.

Byrd (3-3) was led by Mike McGuire with 18 points.

Cave Spring, which has beaten the Terriers twice, also got 18 points from Matt Matheny.

Flora, S.C., (5-3), the only non-Timesland team in the field, defeated Laurel Park 64-58 for fifth place. The Lancers were hampered by the absence of James Millner, who had 30 points in a Friday game. Millner was out with a knee injury, and Laurel Park (5-3) was led by 6-foot-5 junior Gerard Foster with 22. Flora's Geovonia Williams had a game-high 27 points.

Franklin County (3-4) took seventh place with a 74-53 victory over Fieldale-Collinsville in the 9 a.m. game - an eye-opener for New Year's Day fans who hadn't had enough to do the night before.

The Eagles were paced by 6-foot-1 sophomore K.C. Hancock, who established the tournament scoring record with 34 points. He hit 24 in the second half as Franklin County pulled away from the Cavaliers (4-4), who were paced by Ben Seay with 14.
