Think again.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for all of Southwest Virginia for this afternoon and into Tuesday.
By the time you read this, light snow may already be falling in the Roanoke Valley. Here's why:
A low-pressure system developing over the Gulf Coast is moving toward the Carolinas, bringing moist air. When that moist air collides with the cold air already imbedded in Southwest Virginia, snow, sleet or freezing rain will be the result, explained Kane Galleo of the National Weather Service office at Roanoke Regional Airport.
The chance of precipitation is near 100 percent today, with snow changing into sleet or freezing rain, the weather service said. Daytime temperatures should rise no higher than the low 30s, falling into the upper 20s after nightfall.
Through tonight, the chance of precipitation remains near 100 percent, with winds from the northeast continuing in the 10-15 mph range.
Snow should end during the afternoon Tuesday, when highs are expected in the mid to upper 20s.
So button up your overcoat.
