CHEROKEES SUBDUE EXPRESS

The Roanoke Express may have KO'd celebrated female goalie Manon Rheaume, but it couldn't knock out the Knoxville Cherokees on Sunday.

Rallying from a 2-0 deficit after Roanoke scored on its first two shots of the game against Rheaume, Knoxville scored three unanswered goals in the third period to whip the Express 7-4.

The Cherokees (22-11-2) scored three times in the game's final seven minutes, 48 seconds to break a 4-4 tie and deal the Express (16-16-1) its third straight East Coast Hockey League road loss.

Knoxville's Scott Metcalfe scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, maneuvering around Roanoke defenseman Will Averill at the top of the left circle and ripping a drive past Express goalie Jim Mill.

Carl LeBlanc scored the second of his two goals only 1:37 later to give Knoxville a 6-4 lead. Mike Murray's power-play tip-in goal with 3:58 left iced the win.

Things started well enough for the Express. It took only 60 seconds for Roanoke to score, as Lev Berdichevsky whipped a drive past Rheaume from the left-hash mark. Roanoke made it 2-0 only 73 seconds later when defenseman Chris Potter blasted a slap shot over Rheaume's right shoulder.

Rheaume, making her fourth start, all of which have come at home, was then lifted by Knoxville coach Barry Smith in favor of No. 1 netminder Cory Cadden.

Knoxville wasted little time coming back, getting a power-play score from Scott Boston at 4:26, a short-handed goal from LeBlanc at 17:16 and a rebound goal by Steve Flomenhoft at 19:25 to skate off with a 3-2 lead.

The Cherokees made it 4-2 at 7:30 of the second period on John Larson's right-point slap shot.

The Express, which outshot the hosts 16-6 in the second, fought back to tie it at 4 on an unassisted goal by Jeff Jestadt and Dave "Moose" Morissette's score with with 3:16 left in the period.
