LYNCHBURG WON'T GET FUNDS FOR JUNE STORM

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has declined Gov. Douglas Wilder's appeal for assistance to clean up and repair damage caused by a June storm that swept through the Lynchburg area, the governor's office said Monday.

"While the costs for debris removal are indeed significant on a local level, the financial impact on a statewide basis does not appear to be beyond the combined resources of the commonwealth and the city," James L. Witt, FEMA director, wrote in a letter to Wilder.

The governor said he was disappointed with the response.

"When I visited Lynchburg just after the June storm, the degree of devastation was apparent," Wilder said in a statement. "It is unfortunate that FEMA has not seen fit to help reimburse the city for the tremendous costs it absorbed in helping residents and businesses clean up from the storm." - Associated Press
