Pilot slightly injured in crash near airport

WILLIAMSBURG - A small airplane crashed in a wooded area near the Colonial Parkway shortly after taking off from the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport, police said.

The pilot, Terry Brown, 50, of Enterprise, Ala., was not seriously injured.

The single-engine Cessna 206 experienced engine trouble after taking off late Sunday night. Brown tried to land the plane on the parkway, but a power line blocked his path, said state police Sgt. R.W. O'Rourke. - Associated Press

\ Poet-teacher searches for young lost authors

VIRGINIA BEACH - A poetry teacher is looking for some of his former students to get their permission to use their poems in an illustrated book.

Sandford Lyne inspired thousands of students to write poetry in the Poets in Schools program. The program was discontinued because of budget cuts.

Now a New York publisher is about to issue "Ten Second Rain Showers," a collection of poems from the children with whom Lyne worked.

"What's powerful about the book is that the kids are really talking about what it's like to be a young person," Lyne said. "They aren't trying to talk about grand themes over their heads."

Before the book can be published, Lyne needs written permission from each poet featured in the book. Lyne, a published poet, has collected 30 signatures so far but still needs 41 others. Some go back as far as 1983, when Lyne began the poetry program.
