RU OFFICAL SEEKS RADFORD CITY COUNCIL

W.D. "Bill" Yerrick, a 49-year-old Radford University official, is hoping to fill one of two City Council seats up for election May 3.

Yerrick, the university's director of telecommunications since 1976, plans to announce his candidacy at a press conference Tuesday morning.

He hopes to win one of the seats now held by either Gary Weddle or Polly Corn, whose re-election plans are unclear at this point.

There's wide speculation that Weddle, a local clothier, will not run for a second term this spring. The one-time Republican candidate for Congress said Tuesday he hopes by next year to move into a new home he's building in Pulaski County, which would make him ineligible to continue on council.

Weddle said he will make an announcement soon, possibly on Monday.

Corn, the city's vice mayor, has been out of town because of a death in her family and could not be reached for comment. However, Mayor Tom Starnes said he believes she will run again.

The mayor's term also expires this year, and Starnes said Tuesday he would be on the ballot again in May. A Radford Army Ammunition Plant department manager, Starnes has been on council for nearly 20 years and was the city's first popularly elected mayor.

No other candidates have announced for either council or the mayor's seat. The mayor and council members run at large for four-year terms.

Yerrick, a native of Wellsville, N.Y., is active in several civic groups and organizations. He's the immediate past president of the Radford Chamber of Commerce and a member of the City/University Joint Commission on Public Affairs. He's also a member and past president of the local Lions Club.

His press conference begins at 9:30 Tuesday morning in the Norwood Center in downtown Radford.
