EXPRESS GAME PUT ON ICE UNTIL TODAY

Tuesday's snowstorm did something the rest of the East Coast Hockey League hasn't been able to do in the past six weeks - stop the Roanoke Express at home.

With the approval of the Greensboro Monarchs, Express management opted to postpone the ECHL game until today. The game will be played at 7 p.m. at the Roanoke Civic Center.

Express management made the decision to postpone the game at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Although roads had cleared Tuesday afternoon, Express officials said they were worried that predicted cooler temperatures Tuesday night would turn the slush into ice and create dangerous driving conditions for fans.

Roanoke (16-16-1) carries a seven-game home winning streak into the meeting with East Division-leading Greensboro (21-8-5).

A preliminary hearing for Virginia women's basketball player Konecka Drakeford on charges of credit-card theft and credit-card fraud has been continued, possibly until early February or March. An exact date was not available Tuesday because Charlottesville courts were closed. Drakeford, the Cavaliers' second-leading scorer this season as a freshman, has not played since her arrest Dec. 20.

Virginia first baseman Brian Buchanan has been chosen as a preseason first-team All-American by Baseball America. Buchanan, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound junior, hit .322 with six home runs and 37 RBI last season for the Cavaliers.
