WHITHER THE WEATHER

The National Weather Servicwe predicts another storm possibly brewing Friday, although temperatures should remain warm enough to bring rain instead of snow. Low 20s are expected at night with highs up to the mid 40s during the day.

\ Road Report

Crews worked through the night, but many roads were still hazardous for Tuesday morning's commute. By evening, interstate and primary roads were clear, and crews were attacking secondary and subdivision roads.

The 12-county Salem district of the Department of Transportation started the season with 18,000 tons of salt. With storms bashing the East Coast and Midwest for the past few weeks, supplies were down in most states.

Fred Altizer, district administrato, said the district had replenished its supply, but is down to 8,000 tons. What happens if we run out? "It's not easy," Altizer said. Crews lay sand and rocks on the road, but that is not as effective. But Altizer said he's stockpiling daily as supplies become available.
