WILLIAMS CHOSEN TOP PROFESSIONAL BOWLER

Walter Ray Williams Jr., who put together the best season in 15 years on the pro bowling tour, was a near-unanimous pick as the Professional Bowlers Association Player of the Year for 1993.

Williams, whose seven titles in 1993 were the most in one year since Mark Roth's PBA-record eight in 1978, collected 95 percent of the first-place votes cast by the PBA membership. Williams set records for scoring average (222.98), 300 games in one tournament (4) and consecutive 200 games (61). He tied a record with seven 300 games last season.
