FRANKLIN MOONSHINER GETS 5-YEAR SENTENCE

A career moonshiner from Franklin County was sentenced Wednesday to five years - the longest jail term in a moonshining case from a Virginia state court.

A Pittyslvania County jury found Jimmy Lee Furrow, 47, guilty of manufacturing untaxed whiskey under a new state law that includes enhanced penalties for repeat offenders.

The law, which went into effect Oct. 1, carries a maximum of five years in prison.

Furrow's most recent conviction came in May 1992 in Franklin County. In 1991, Furrow gained notoriety when a jury acquitted him even though he was caught red-handed in a barn that contained an illegal still.
