General Motors Corp. will hire up to 2,000 engineers this year to meet growing demand for new cars and trucks.

"I'm feeling pretty good about it, ' chief executive officer Jack Smith said Thursday. "Hey, the mood is better everywhere."

Smith also indicated that GM made a net profit in 1993 on a consolidated basis, including subsidiaries, its first since earning $4.2 billion in 1989. The company will report its fourth-quarter and annual results in early February.
