DAVIS STUNS BOITANO IN SKATING

Scott Davis, in an electrifying display of jumping, spinning and showmanship, upset Brian Boitano to win his second consecutive U.S. Figure Skating Championship on Thursday night.

Davis, 21, stamped himself as a strong medal contender for the Lillehammer Olympics with a performance that had the crowd - and Kathy Casey, his coach - leaping in the air in celebration before he had finished his free skate at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena. The native of Great Falls, Mont., nailed six triple jumps, including two triple-axels.

Boitano, 30, the 1988 Olympic champion competing again after five years as a professional, was second. He looked exhausted when he completed his program.

Both qualified for the Games in Norway, where they will meet far tougher competition.

Aren Nielsen, in the performance of his life, surged into third. Todd Eldredge, the 1990-91 U.S. champion, was fourth.

In pairs, Jenni Meno and Todd Sand, who competed at the 1992 Olympics with different partners and got together in late 1992, skated crisply to win the technical program. The favorites and 1993 U.S. silver medalists were ahead of Kyoko Ina and Jason Dungjen and veterans Karen Courtland and Todd Reynolds. The free skate is Saturday, with the top three couples making the Olympic team.
