SHREDDING-PLANT WORKER LOSES PART OF ARM IN ACCIDENT

The arm of a Shredded Products Corp. worker was severed Friday morning while he was sorting automobile parts.

Robert Carr of Montvale was in very serious condition at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where surgeons were unable to reattach his right arm at the point where it severed from his elbow, a nursing supervisor said.

About 8:30 a.m., Carr's arm was cut by a pinch point between the belt and the conveyor, said Daniel Board, a spokesman at Roanoke Electric Steel, the parent company of Shredded Products. Carr's job at the car-shredding operation is to remove unwanted parts from a conveyor belt.
