VIRGINIA BAR TAKES ROANOKE LAWYER'S LICENSE

A Roanoke lawyer accused of writing $18,000 in bad checks has surrendered his license to the Virginia State Bar.

George W. Harris III, 34, voluntarily petitioned the bar's disciplinary board to take his license in late December. The board approved the petition this week, revoking Harris' license.

Harris was charged in the summer with writing more than $18,000 in bad checks in Roanoke, Roanoke County and Salem. He is accused of writing checks for up to $2,500 and cashing them, knowing there was not enough in his account to cover them.

Harris is awaiting trial on those charges.

In November, search warrants filed in Roanoke Circuit Court revealed Harris is also suspected of taking more than $50,000 from trust funds he was handling. No charges have been filed in that case.
