TECH LANDS QUARTERBACK

Albert Clark, the All-Washington Metro quarterback in 1992, is one of two Fork Union Military Academy football players who have indicated they will sign letters of intent with Virginia Tech.

Virginia also has received an oral commitment - its fourth - from two-time All-Metro selection Brian McCarthy, a 6-foot-3 wide receiver from DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, Md.

McCarthy, who caught more than 100 passes the past two seasons, picked the Cavaliers over Texas. His father, former Boston College fullback Brendan McCarthy, played professionally for the Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos in the 1960s.

Clark announced that he was going to UVa after his senior year at Archbishop Carroll in Washington, but he did not sign, although he eventually met NCAA requirements for a scholarship.

"It's another steal for Virginia Tech," said John Shuman, Fork Union's coach.

Tech's other commitment was from Shelly Ellison, a 6-2, 235-pound fullback. Ellison played at Hampton High School in 1992 and was set to go to Tech without a scholarship before enrolling at Fork Union for academic reasons.

"He's a big truck, now," said Shuman, who said Ellison visited Cincinnati and Syracuse and will cancel a trip to North Carolina State.

Clark has not taken his official visit to Tech, "but he already has been to [Blacksburg] when we played Tech's JVs," Shuman said. "He's told Tech that that's where he wants to go."

Clark, a 6-1, 197-pounder, gained a reputation for his option skills, but he also completed 60 percent of his passes in 1993 and had a 15-4 ratio of touchdown passes to interceptions.
