TERRIERS NOTCH LEAGUE WIN OVER MOUNTAINEERS

Junior guard Jeremy Obenchain scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers, as William Byrd opened its Blue Ridge District schedule with a 79-63 victory over visiting Alleghany in high school boys' basketball Friday night.

Obenchain also had nine rebounds and four assists for the Terriers (4-3). Guard Mike McGuire added 15 points, and forward Kevin Tuck had 13. Guard Donald Childress had 11 points and eight rebounds, and sophomore guard Chris Childress had 11 points.

Todd Wheatley led the Mountaineers (3-4) with 16 points. Jermaine Winston added 15, and James Hughes had 14. \

BUENA VISTA - Mike McElroy scored 21 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the Fighting Blues (5-1, 1-0) over the Chargers in the Pioneer District.

Pat Lennon led Bath County (4-3, 0-1) with 19.

It was a night to remember for the Highlanders and a night to forget for the Rams in the Pioneer District opener for both teams.

Glenvar (3-2) buried Highland (1-2) with school records in points and margin of victory. The previous record for the Highlanders was 101 points in the early 1970s, and the 80-point margin of victory is believed to be the biggest ever for a Glenvar team.

Seven Highlanders scored in double figures. Brad Melton led the way with 23 points and 19 rebounds as Glenvar shot 52 percent from the field. Highland shot 19 percent. \

MARTINSVILLE - The Hawks made a run in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs (7-1, 6-1) maintained their game-long lead en route to the Piedmont District victory.

Junior forward Michael Martin led Martinsville with a game-high 20 points, and Todd Johnson and Manti Venable had 10 each.

The Bulldogs used a strong defensive effort in the third quarter to extend their 31-24 halftime lead to 44-35. However, Gretna made a fourth-quarter run behind William Merritt and Randy Stone. Merritt, who scored all 17 of his points in the second half, had 13 in the fourth quarter, including two 3-pointers. \

COLLINSVILLE - James Millner scored eight of his game-high 22 points in the third quarter as the Lancers beat the Cavaliers in a Piedmont District game.

Laurel Park (7-3, 6-1) led 29-27 at halftime before it took over with a 21-9 third period. Darrell Wilson and Corey Wilson added 14 points apiece for the Lancers.

Shane Donavant led Fieldale-Collinsville (4-6, 4-3) with 17 points. \

RINER - The Eagles held off a furious Pioneers rally in the fourth quarter to earn a Mountain Empire District victory.

Auburn (5-1, 4-1) led by 26 points after three quarters, but Fort Chiswell outscored the Eagles 39-18 in the fourth quarter to cut their deficit to five points. Dyer Jackson and Jody Burnett combined for 31 points for Fort Chiswell (0-4, 0-3) in the final quarter. \

BUCHANAN - The Cougars used a 24-9 third quarter to pull away from the Knights in the Pioneer District opener for both teams.

Covington (3-4) was led by Van Rogers' game-high 22 points, including four 3-pointers. Keeno Jones added 14 for the Cougars.

Keith Bryant led James River (0-4) with 20 points. \

BASSETT - Forward Tyree Hairston tossed in a game-high 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, leading the Bengals past the Wildcats in the Piedmont District.

Bassett (4-4, 4-2) bolted to a 20-6 first-quarter behind a barrage of fastbreak baskets created by its pressing defense. The Bengals, who also got 19 points and 10 assists from Art Wade, never were threatened.

Claude Glenn led Dan River with 13 points. \

INDEPENDENCE - Bryan Boyer played the game of his life in the Blue Devils' Mountain Empire District rout of the Green Wave.

Boyer scored a career-high 27 points, had a game-high 13 rebounds and added three assists, two steals and three blocks. He scored 12 points in the third quarter as Grayson County (7-1, 5-0) stayed unbeaten in the district.

Patrick Bailey led Narrows (1-4, 1-2) with 21 points. \

BLAND - David Lambert driving baseline basket with 18 seconds remaining gave the Rockets the winning margin in the Mountain Empire District game.

Rocky Gap (1-5, 1-4) twice missed the front end of one-and-one free-throw opportunities in the closing seconds.

David Lambert scored a game-high 20 points, and Shannon Havens added 19 for Bland (4-4, 3-2). Joseph Cromer led Rocky Gap with 17 points. \

GLADE SPRING - Rural Retreat stayed unbeaten with a fourth-quarter burst to overtake the Rebels for a Hogoheegee District victory.

Bradley Guynn scored 18 points to lead the Indians (3-0, 2-0). Patrick Henry, which led 45-44 entering the final period, was paced by Chris Castle's 17 points. \

WYTHEVILLE - Jeff Bourne scored a game-high 18 points as the Maroons beat the Cavaliers in a Hogoheegee District matchup.

Aaron Andrews added 16 points and 12 rebounds for George Wythe (3-4, 2-1), which used a 22-11 second quarter to take a 35-26 halftime lead. \

\ Dan River 79, Magna Vista 77: At Ringgold, the Wildcats used a balanced attack and late rally to capture a Piedmont District victory.

Magna Vista (4-2, 4-2) led 63-57 after three quarters before Dan River outscored the Warriors 22-14 in the final quarter for the win. \

Roanoke Valley Christian 74, Carlisle 54: Josh MacDermod scored seven of his 26 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Eagles (3-4, 2-0) past the Chiefs (2-7, 1-3) in a Virginia Independent Conference contest. \
