Kent Culuko scored 23 points and Clayton Ritter added 22 on Saturday night to help lead James Madison to a 96-88 victory over Old Dominion in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both basketball teams.
Sophomore center Odell Hodge, the former Laurel Park High School star, led Old Dominion with 35 points and seven rebounds. Kevin Swann added 16 points for the Monarchs, and Petey Sessoms had 14.
James Madison (7-4) used a 25-10 run in the final four minutes of the first half and the first four of the second to take a 58-44 lead. Culuko had 12 points in the surge, and Ritter added six.
Old Dominion (7-5) cut its deficit to one point twice, the second time at 86-85 with 2 minutes, 21 seconds left, but the Dukes hit all eight of their free throws the rest of the way, including six by Dennis Leonard.
James Madison also got 15 points from Louis Rowe, 14 from Leonard and 11 points and 13 rebounds from Michael Venson.
