LATE FREE THROWS LIFT GALAX TO WIN OVER SHAWSVILLE

Tito Crockett connected on three of four free throws in the final 20 seconds Friday to lead Galax to a 59-58 high school boys' basketball victory over Shawsville in a Mountain Empire District contest.

Shawsville's Jeremey Nichols led all scorers with 20 points, hitting four 3-pointers.

Matt Snow paced Galax (3-3, 3-1) with 16 points. Crockett added 13 as the Maroon Tide took a 36-25 halftime lead.

The Shawnees (0-7, 0-5) used a 22-7 third quarter to take a 47-43 lead, but Crockett's free throws clinched it for Galax. \

Auburn 85

Fort Chiswell 80

RINER - The Eagles held off a furious Pioneers rally in the fourth quarter to earn a Mountain Empire District victory.

Auburn led by 26 points after three quarters, but Fort Chiswell outscored the Eagles 39-18 in the fourth quarter to pull to within five points. Dyer Jackson and Jody Burnett combined for 31 points for Fort Chiswell (0-4, 0-3) in the final quarter.

Terry Millirons and Jon Reed led Auburn with 28 and 25 points, respectively. Center Randy Bonds, who fouled out early in the fourth quarter, scored 10 for the Eagles (5-1, 4-1).

Burnett paced Fort Chiswell with 29 points and Jackson added 27. \

Grayson County 78

Narrows 60

INDEPENDENCE - Bryan Boyer scored a career-high 27 points in the Blue Devils' Mountain Empire District rout of the Green Wave.

Boyer also had a game-high 13 rebounds and added three assists, two steals and three blocked shots. He scored 12 points in the third quarter as Grayson County (7-1, 5-0) stayed unbeaten in the district.

Patrick Bailey led Narrows (1-4, 1-2) with 21 points. \

Junior center Felecia Manns scored a game-high 17 points, pacing the Colonels to the Roanoke Valley District romp.

Letecia Claytor, Lucretia Holland and Kelly Irving added nine points apiece for Fleming (6-2, 2-0), which broke to a 11-point first-quarter lead and was never pushed. Irving also collected nine rebounds for the Colonels.

Elisha Jones paced PH (0-6, 0-3) with 7 points. \
