LIBERTY MOVES TO 7-1, FLATTENS AMHERST 62-46

Liberty tightened its defense and stepped up its offense in the second half to take over first place in the Seminole District with a 62-46 victory over Amherst in high school boys' basketball Friday night.

The Minutemen (7-1 overall, 7-1 district) overcame a 32-21 halftime deficit. The Lancers (3-2, 3-2) are tied for second place.

Craig Coleman scored all 15 of his points in the second half. His three 3-pointers sparked Liberty's 21-8 run in the third quarter that gave the Minutemen command. \

Alleghany 63

Junior guard Jeremy Obenchain scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers, as the Terriers (4-3) opened their Blue Ridge District schedule with a victory over the visiting Mountaineers (3-4).

Obenchain also had nine rebounds and four assists. Guard Mike McGuire added 15 points, forward Kevin Tuck had 13, guard Donald Childress had 11 points and eight rebounds and sophomore guard Chris Childress had 11 points. \

It was a night to remember for the Highlanders and a night to forget for the Rams in the Pioneer District opener for both teams.

Glenvar (3-2) buried Highland (1-2) with school records in points scored and margin of victory. The previous record for the Highlanders was 101 points in the early 1970s, and the 80-point margin of victory is believed to be the highest ever for a Glenvar team. \

Tony Joyce tallied 16 points as the Celtics routed the Warriors in a non-district game.

Mike Kolnok and Greg Broderick each added 11 for Roanoke Catholic (3-3).

MONETA - Cornelius Foxx and Jeff English combined for 35 points, leading the Golden Eagles (2-3, 2-3) to a Seminole District victory.

BUCHANAN - The Cougars used a 24-9 third quarter to pull away from the Knights (0-4) in the Pioneer District opener for both teams.

Covington (3-4) was led by Van Rogers' game-high 22 points - which included four 3-pointers. \

BUENA VISTA - Mike McElroy scored 21 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the Fighting Blues (5-1, 1-0) over the Chargers in the Pioneer District.

Pat Lennon led Bath County (4-3, 0-1) with 19. \

Junior center Felecia Manns scored a game-high 17 points, pacing the Colonels to the Roanoke Valley District romp over PH (0-6, 0-3).

The Celtics (4-4) held the visitors without a field goal until 5:19 remained in the game as they thoroughly dominated the non-conference matchup.

Teresa Monsour led the Celtics' offense with 13 points. \

The Raiders held North Cross scoreless in the first and fourth quarters in a Blue Ridge Conference game.

Heather Perry led North Cross (5-2, 3-0) with 12 points. \

Thursday's game

\ Roanoke Valley Christian 74, Carlisle 54: Josh MacDermod scored seven of his 26 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Eagles past the Chiefs in a Virginia Independent Conference contest. \
