BRITISH TV DOES 'TALES OF THE CITY'

A landlady greets tenants by taping marijuana joints to their doors. Roller-skating transvestite "nuns" cheer the gay winner of an underpants disco contest. Gender, sexual preference and even race prove to be up for grabs.

It's all in "Tales of the City," the sweetly crazed yet charming world of San Francisco in 1976, glimpsed first in Armistead Maupin's novel of the same title and then over six hours on Britain's Channel Four this fall. The series has its American premier Monday on PBS.

Please see microfilm (or DTI) for the rest of the story.
