LOCAL ISSUES

Many Western Virginia legislators will focus on school funding and road funding - they want this region to get more of each. Here are some other local issues:

Explore Park and Virginia Museum of Natural History: State Sen. Brandon Bell, R-Roanoke County, will seek a state study of whether the two operations should merge. Martinsville legislators, fearful a merger could lead to the museum moving, appear ready to oppose a study.

Virginia Museum of Transportation: Gov. Douglas Wilder's proposed budget didn't include anything for the museum, which last year received $110,000 in state funds. Dels. Clifton Woodrum and Victor Thomas, D-Roanoke, will try to restore funding for the museum, which had sought $200,000 in the next fiscal year.

Mill Mountain Zoo: The zoo has never been in the state budget. But Woodrum will ask for $42,000 in operating funds.

Center in the Square: Wilder's budget proposes that the center and two of its museums, the Science Museum of Western Virginia and the Art Museum of Western Virginia, receive the same amount of funding they got last time: $161,915 for Center in the Square, $178,978 for the science museum, $65,000 for the art museum. Woodrum will look to increase that.

Habit for Humanity: Del. Tommy Baker, R-Dublin, and state Sen. Malfourd "Bo" Trumbo, R-Fincastle, will seek tax-exempt status for the Pulaski County branch.

Long Way Home: Trumbo will seek funds for the nonprofit outdoor drama theater at Radford. Last year, the theater received $2,500 in state funds for advertising.
