ALLEGHANY DEFEATS BLACKSBURG 64-56

Alleghany used a 32-15 advantage in free-throw attempts to defeat Blacksburg 64-56 in a boys' non-district basketball game Saturday night.

Todd Wheatley scored 16 points to lead Alleghany (4-4), which hit 18 of its free throws, compared with six for Blacksburg (0-4). Jermaine Winston had 13 points and Shrell Bolden added 11.

Jay Safford scored a game-high 18 points for the Indians, who also got 11 points from Michael Dowdy and 10 from Ben Araman. \

Franklin County 67

Martinsville 64

ROCKY MOUNT - Fifteen was the magic number for the Eagles as they got that many points from three players in a wild non-district victory over the Bulldogs.

Chad Foutz, K.C. Hancock and Carlos Holland led Franklin County (5-4) in scoring during a game that featured 41 fouls and two ejections.

Michael Martin led Martinsville (8-2) with 26 points and Markus Secton added 10.

Rocky Gap 49

ROCKY GAP - Jay Gray scored 24 points and had three blocks as the Eagles whipped the G-Men in a non-district game.

Graham led 32-22 at halftime and coasted to the win.

Jacob Dews scored 13 points for the Eagles and John Nunley added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Joseph Cromer scored 12 points and Frank Nunley chipped in 11 for the G-Men. \

Westchester (N.C.) 55

Carlisle 42

MARTINSVILLE - Todd Godwin scored 13 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter as Westchester raced past the Chiefs in a non-conference game.

The score was tied 32-32 after three quarters, but Westchester used a 23-10 fourth period to take control.

Brian Hardy and Rod Mitchell led Carlisle (2-8) with 13 points apiece.

\ Auburn 65

Grayson County 57

RINER - The Eagles, forced to play at a slower tempo than they prefer by the Blue Devils' deliberate attack, took control in the second half and held on for a victory in a Mountain Empire District showdown.

Jon Reed led the way with 17 points for Auburn, which cut its miscues from 19 in the first half to nine after intermission. Randy Bonds contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Mike Bower and Kerry Millirons scored 12 points each. Bower also had six assists.

The victory moved the Eagles (6-1, 5-1) into a tie with Grayson County for first place in the district, pending the outcome of Saturday night's game between co-leader Floyd County and Giles.

Shane Griffin had 10 points to lead the Blue Devils (6-2, 5-1), who could not overcome their 28 turnovers. \

Friday's games

\ Magna Vista 102, Tunstall 94: In Ridgeway, Tony Holmes and Marcus Toney accounted for 53 of the Warriors' points in a Piedmont District win.

Holmes, who fouled out early in the fourth quarter, led Magna Vista (5-2, 5-2) with 27 points, and Toney scored 26 points and had seven steals.

Tunstall's Khris Law scored a game-high 39 points. \

Covington Boys Home 72, Mount Carmel 64: In Luray, Donnie Costigan scored a game-high 22 points, and Scottie Forbes scored 21 points and had 17 rebounds as the visiting Indians won.
