OBIT MCCARGO, REV. JULIA W.

McCARGO, Rev. Julia W., 52, of Roanoke, was called to Glory from a local hospital on Friday, January 7, 1994. She was Pastor of St. John A.M.E. Church, Delaney Court, appointed by the presiding Prelate of the Second Episcopal District of African Methodist Episcopal Churches in June 1993. Although she had only been in Roanoke for a short period of time, she contributed greatly to the religious community of Delaney Court and the Roanoke Valley. A native of Demopolis, Ala., she attended the University of Maryland in Baltimore, School of Radiology. She also earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Maryland. She accepted her call to the ministry in June 1986, at Campfield A.M.E. Church in Baltimore. She was ordained an Elder in the A.M.E. Conference in 1989. Her greatest triumph in life came when she received her Master's degree from Virginia Union School of Theology, Richmond, Va. in May 1993. She has served as Pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church, Harrisonburg, Red Bluff A.M.E. Church and the A.M.E. Church in Wytheville. Survivors include two sons, Terry McCargo and Derrick McCargo; one grandson, Terry Jr.; mother, Viola Hoskins Davis; father, Esau Hoskins; four brothers, Arthur Jones, Esau Hoskins Jr., Jerome Hoskins and Carlos Hoskins; three sisters, Mary Clemson, Mildred Burston, and Sharon Hoskins-Thompson; a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and wonderful, loving friends. She is also survived by her devout Christian family members of the St. John's African Methodist Episcopal Church, Delaney Court, where she has given Christian leadership and divine guidance, and developed mutual love, compassion and respect. A Christian wake service will be held at the Ebenezer A.M.E. Church, 1563 Lafayette Blvd., N.W., on Monday, January 10, 1994, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. She will then be taken to Richmond, Va., for funeral services at the Bethel Third Street A.M.E. Church, 614 North Third Street, Tuesday at 10 a.m. The officiating clergy will be the Rev. Roger Hall Reed, Pastor, Bishop Frederick Calhoun James, presiding Prelate Second Episcopal District, and presiding Elder Paul Clifford Adkins, Richmond-Roanoke District. Final religious rites will be held on Tuesday, at the Maryland National Memorial Park, Laurel, Md. Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home in Roanoke and the Joseph H. Brown Jr. Funeral Home in Baltimore, will be handling arrangements.
