Fast, who met Saturday with GOP leaders in Pulaski and Montgomery counties, is the only Republican so far to consider a race against Boucher. Boucher is serving his fifth term.
Fast is the mathematics department coordinator at Bluefield. The Ohio native lives in Tazewell with his wife, Judy, and two sons.
While he has not officially declared his candidacy, Fast has been speaking to Southwest Virginia groups for the past month and says he has received solid support.
He attacked Boucher on Saturday for his support of the Freedom of Choice bill, an abortion-rights measure that failed in Congress last year.
He also said that Boucher and outgoing Democratic Gov. Douglas Wilder "wanted big government, big bureaucracy and pork-barrel spending."
Fast called for cuts in personal income tax payments by increasing the deductions for families. "They need the money more than Washington does," he said.
