OBIT HALLSTEAD, REV. BYRON S.
HALLSTEAD, Rev. Byron S., 73, of Richmond, died Friday, January 7, 1994. He
is survived by his wife, Jean Carr Hallstead; three sons, Byron Thomas
Hallstead of San Antonio, Texas, Donald Arthur Hallstead of Dublin, and John
Francis Hallstead of Pulaski; two daughters, Gail H. Gowin of Virginia Beach,
and Brenda H. Dennison of Hampton; one sister, Doris Roberts of New Hartford,
N.Y., and 9 grandchildren. Mr. Hallstead lived a lifetime of community service
and served in and held numerous offices in civic organizations, including
Civitan, Ruritan, and American Cancer Society, was a lifetime PTA member, a
lifetime member of the American Legion and served as State Department Chaplain
longer than anyone else had served. He was a member of the ACCA Temple of the
Shriners in Richmond, Va., and sang in their Chanters group. He served in the
U.S. Army during World War II and had the distinguished honor of being
appointed Chaplain in Greenland, when a sister ship, the Dorchester, was sunk
and the four Chaplains aboard went down with the ship. He retired after 35
years as a Minister of the Virginia Methodist Conference, serving churches in
the Portsmouth, Petersburg, Norfolk, Arlington, Peninsula, Charlottesville and
Richmond Districts. He served as Vice-President of Ferrum Jr. College, in
charge of fund-raising for re-development of the college. He was honored to be
invited to participate in the 1980 Lincoln Day Observance in Washington, D.C.,
under President Carter. He played professional baseball as a young man with
the Cincinatti Redlegs. His remains rest at the Joseph W. Bliley Funeral
Homes, Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, where the family will receive
friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be held 2
p.m. Monday, at Asbury United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Sunset
Memorial Park.
